Built in a wine factory of the 1930s, the museum displays a series of fascinating relics of the agricultural estate: statements of the rural way of life, of wine production and typical habits of a farmhouse in Salento. The exhibition in enriched by an educational pathway that takes you along the vine journey: from the Caucasus to the Mediterranean. The museum also introduce the local grapevines and tells the story of the so-called ‘blending of wine’, before Salento wines gained their fame of excellence on international markets.
Dedicated panels illustrates the words of the wine in the traditional Salento language, with a special focus on drinking vessels, showing the shapes and uses they acquired in the traditions of the local pottery making.
The museum photo collection has a special historic value: it displays for the first time the works of the photographer Giuseppe Palumbo whose plates and films from 1909 to 1932 are kept in the Museo Provinciale of Lecce.
Merum Museum is an important place to understand the evolution of wine making in Salento, with a wine shop where you can taste and buy the most exquisite wines and an area dedicated to typical foods from the land of Arneo.
